Sthapatya (vastu) of Jharkhand Mahadev temple, Jaipur.

Jharkhand Mahadev is a very old temple of lord Shiva located in Jaipur. This temple was designed by S.Natarajan who was a traditional sthapati. The temple is very old and I do not know whether the legendary sthapati is alive or not.
The temple follows all the rules for “Devalaya vastu” and is designed with Dravidian style. The peculiar moustache on idols of rudraganas above the Gopuram( enterance door) is a traditional style followed by Dravidian artists. See pics 1 for ref.

The actual construction is done on Chatursara or Square shape.

The dik nyas is done as is evident through the figure. However on further findings I discovered that Suddha Prache is been used for deciding the main door. According to “Manasara” Suddha Prache should be used for liberation. It is good for ascetics or Siddhars. This must have been the reason behind using the Suddha prache for this temple.

The entrance to temple is allowed through a beautiful Gopuram which carries Five stories. The odd numbers are important according to Agam literature. The Goupram is bit higher above the ground which is essential.

Once you enter through the main door you pass through the passage and reach the main hall which is called “mandap” in vastu.

Directly above the mandap you can see the beautiful idols of Shiva parivar.

The mandap is the udar or stomach according to human scale. However there is only one mandap in this temple. This must have been because of space constraint. Directly in front of mandap is the antaralam. The mandap is supported by five pillars on both the sides. The pillars carry beautiful potikas, however there is no taper. These pillars are called “Rudrakantas” according to Mayamatta. Pothikas are described in ‘”Manushalaya Chandrika” in the fifth chapter. According to human scale the garbha is the face and mouth of complex. The energy consumed through mouth is distributed to Mandap in a sublime form or “Prana”. The shikharam or top transmits the space energy to the Mukhyapeetha or main idol.

The garbha grah carries very beautiful shivlingam. There are three openings. One is for front darshan and another for sides. There is restriction for opening at back and so you can see the idol from three sides. The garbh carries a very beautiful shikhar and kalash.

The garbhgruha is a very important part of the temple. Garbh means women’s womb. It is the place where creation takes its shape and hence the primordial energy in the temple which is transmitted through Kalash is distributed through Garbha. This temple is very peaceful from inside and one can feel the creative energies over here. People are not generally allowed to enter the “Garbha” which is done to maintain the sanctity of the temple.

There is no “Parikrama” around the temple. Many agam granthas mention that shiva temple should not carry any parikrama and hence the rule is followed over here.

There is a beautiful and huge idol of “Nandikeshwara” on the North side of shiva lingam.

There is a “Yajna shala” at the Southern side of the plot. Ritualistic fire ceremonies are performed in this shala. You can listen to beautiful Rudri recitations over here.

There is very huge banyan tree in North east side of temple premise. The banyan is considered an abode of Rudraganas and its presence is auspicious in a Shiva temple.
